Today is day 6 in India, day 4 at Devnar. It's completely different to what I expected- the school is huge with 500 pupils- not the 200 I was told! I was interested in going to Devnar because I was told it would be a mixture of social care and teaching- with the children being blind but it's not like that at all. The children run around, gambole up and down the stairs and know exactly where all the classrooms are, they wander completely freely. In the morning we are awoken to bangs on the door and cries of 'Anna Madam!' they struggle ore with Fidra's name. Today I have managed to make friends with more of the staff, especially the computer teacher Sashi who has offered to teach me how to write and read braille in private lessons after school- I already know most of the alphabet! Me and Fidra are trying hard to learn basic Telegu as the staff and students are very limited in their English. Teaching is going to be a huge challenge! I was dragged into a class yesterday and told to teach which terrified me- the children were struggling because I didnt know what to do so I hope I will be okay. I sat in some of the classes today and have some ideas so I feel much better. The food here is very different and I'm still getting used to eating with my hand (right not left!), Padma finds it very funny when the chilly makes us cry! Today we bought our first saris and will have then to celebrate teachers day tomorrow- the staff re eager to show us how to wear them and to buy us bangles and jewellery which is exciting. Tomorrow I will look Indian!!
